The most fundamental text on marriage is Genesis 2:24, For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife and they will become one flesh. The man and his wife were both naked and they felt no shame.
We are usually drawn to our opposites. We counter balance each other's strengths and weaknesses as we are fused together at the deepest levels. Generally men are for work and women for relationships. That is not to say that men do not form relationships, or that women do not work. But each sex has their strengths and their weaknesses and abides within their psyche and when they are fused together at the deepest levels they become one flesh.
That exclusiveness of the one flesh relationship, if you read through the rest of scripture, usually disallows any other relationship, whether it be homosexuality, polygamy, adultery, pre-marital sex, concubines and other sexual perversions. Why? Because they violate the oneness intended by God and will destroy the happiness of that exclusive relationship. This is affirmed in the New Testament in 1 Corinthians 6:18-20 where Paul writes, Run from sexual sin. No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does. For sexual immorality is a sin against your own body. Don't you realise that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who lives in you and was given to you by God. You do not belong to yourself for God bought you with a high price, so you must honour God with your body.
Let's look again at Genesis 2:25, The man and his wife were both naked and they felt no shame. You need to realise they were friends, yes, but they were also partners as well as lovers. The man and his wife were both naked and they felt no shame. God created the human body - all of the human body. Not one part is by accident. Your sexuality is part of your humanity. For the majority of people the body is one half of an equation, it is incomplete. It is like a band without a drummer, or a sentence without a verb, or a cake without icing. And that is by design. God made you that way on purpose so that you would share your sexuality with another human being and He created sexuality as the glue to hold a marriage together.
The man and his wife were both naked and they felt no shame. This is also a statement about transparency in marriage. It means literally and figuratively, that there is to be nothing between the couple. Everything is to be open and transparent in thought, word and deed, nothing is hidden. The more it is so, the more transparent it is, the less there is suspicion, the more it is transparent, the more is the trust.
If you want a recipe for love to endure to the end then the Bible gives it perfectly in 1 Corinthians 13:4 onwards. If you want your marriage to work, this is it. Love is patient, love is kind, it does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud, it is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
